CURRICULUM

"Striving to offer the best educational start to promote your child's lifetime of learning"

At Frieth CEC we implement the National Curriculum from Foundation Stage through to the end of Key Stage 2.

Foundation Stage Curriculum

The Foundation Stage is the first part of the National Curriculum focusing on the distinct needs of children aged 3[1] to the end of the Reception year in primary school.  It is organised into six areas of learning:

Mathematical development Communication, language and literacy
Creative development Development of knowledge and understanding of the world
Physical development Personal, social and emotional development

The National Curriculum

The National Curriculum is a framework used by all maintained schools to ensure that teaching and learning is balanced and consistent.  It sets out:

  •         The subjects taught.
  •         The knowledge, skills and understanding required in each subject.
  •         Standards or attainment targets in each subject that teachers can use to measure a child's progress
            and  plan their future learning.
  •         How each child's progress is assessed and reported.

The National Curriculum is organised into blocks of years called 'Key Stages'.  The current subjects within the National Curriculum are:

English Mathematics
Science Information and Communication Technology
Design and Technology History
Geography Art and Design
Music Physical Education

[1] Our first intake is into Reception during the year in which the child is five.

Literacy
Literacy skills are at the heart of the drive to raise standards across the curriculum. At Frieth, we promote and develop all skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, through a wide range of exciting and stimulating activities. We aim to capture the children's imagination and curiosity and to open up to them the world of language.

Numeracy
The answer is 42!
The question is 41+1=___, or maybe7x6=___, or again 44-2=___,
or even 10+10+10+10+2=___, could it be half of 84?
'.
Our Numeracy times are just like life, many questions and many more simple, obscure and obvious answers. It is our pleasure to use a variety of means and strategies to encourage your child to enjoy exploring the world of mathematics.
At Frieth School we give children many opportunities to find out about numbers, shapes, spaces, measures and handling data. These topics spiral through Key Stages 1 & 2 allowing children to achieve higher and higher levels. What are these topics? We find them all around us on cars, television, even chocolate bar prices. What an opportunity to encourage to search, discover and continue to investigate!
Our small classes enable us to spend time with each child, taking part in a group's activities or leading class tasks. The Numeracy Strategy is implemented throughout the school, supported by a wide range of resources. This enables each child to face life's challenges and achieve their potential. They can then look forward to the next task, whether it is baking a cake, managing a budget or using the pennies in a purse wisely.

Science
Science stimulates and excites
pupils' curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. Scientific method is about developing explanations through experimentation and this is an important element of our curriculum.
Pupils learn how
scientific ideas contribute to technological change and we believe that science should stretch the imagination and creativity of young people in school.

ICT
Information and Communication Technology (lCT) prepares pupils
to participate in a rapidly changing world.
Pupils use ICT tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information
creatively. Every child is given the opportunity to develop ICT skills using the extensive range of hardware and software in our lCT Suite.

Art
An exciting variety of creative experiences enables all children to access the virtues of the Arts. Experimentation is key, both through the use of a variety of materials and the adventure offered by both two and three-dimensional design.
Children are introduced to world renowned artists alongside locally based talent. This inspires and stimulates subject interest.
Art is an invaluable tool to develop an understanding of other curriculum areas.
Work is regularly displayed in all areas of the school.

Music
Pupils are encouraged to listen, compose and perform. The children are given opportunities to participate in musical events alongside other schools and to perform at school and community celebrations.

Design and Technology
Children are encouraged to design and make a variety of items and to learn the associated skills with growing confidence.

Religious Education
It is important to the school that all pupils develop sound moral values and the ethos of the teaching is based on respect, sensitivity and awareness of others. We have close links with all the local parishes and the Diocese of Oxford and acts of collective worship are held daily.

(A right to withdraw from all or any part of either religious education or worship exists and an alternative learning opportunity will be provided.)

Physical Education
The school is keen to promote healthy living and PE is central to this aim. As well as curriculum lessons, the children have the chance to participate in a number of extra-curricular activities including cross-country, football and athletics. We complete where possible, with events ranging from football matches against local schools to district athletics. We even reached national Brazilian football finals in 2005 - no mean feat for a small school!

Humanities
How do you know who you are unless you know where you've come from? How can you tell what's going to happen, unless you know what's happened before? History isn't just about the past. It's about why we are who we are - and about what's next.
What is our knowledge worth if we know nothing about the world that sustains us, nothing about natural systems and climate, nothing about other countries and cultures?

Other Non-Statutory Subjects

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship
At Frieth we believe in the importance of education for the development of the whole child.  PSHE and Citizenship help to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens.  PSHE and Citizenship is included across the curriculum and contributes significantly to helping prepare our pupils for the opportunities and challenges of life.

French
We teach French to all Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils.
